Expanded Big Bash to kick off in Perth (Perth Tourism and Events) Thursday May 27, 2010

The Western Warriors will host the opening match and an additional two games at the WACA Ground in the 2010-11 KFC Twenty20 Big Bash.
All states will play six matches, three at home and three away, in an expanded competition this summer after playing five games in the past three Big Bash tournaments.
The Warriors are at home against Tasmania on Thursday December 30, and will also meet 2009-10 finalists South Australia (Thursday January 13) and Victoria (Tuesday January 18) at the WACA Ground.
Away matches are scheduled against 2009 Champions League victors New South Wales at Sydney’s Stadium Australia (Sunday January 9), Queensland at the Gabba (Tuesday January 25) and a return bout with the Tigers at Bellerive Oval (Thursday January 27).
The Preliminary Final will be held on Tuesday February 1, with the Final set down for Saturday February 5. If the Warriors qualify to host the Final, it will be held on Friday February 4 due to the Commonwealth Bank Series match between Australia and England, which is scheduled for the WACA Ground on Sunday February 6.
The finalists of the 2010-11 Big Bash will qualify for the 2011 Champions League Twenty20, and all states have been active in recruiting international stars to assist in their charge at the lucrative tournament.

Australia’s Tourist Arrivals Tops 12 million (Perth Tourism News)
Australia’s Tourist Arrivals Tops 12 million
The number of international visitors coming to Australia has remained steady despite the tough conditions for tourism globally, according to the latest new tourism figures.
Figures released this week by the Australian Bureau of Statistics have highlighted Australia’s “resilience in the difficult economic climate”. Approximately 12.4 million people arrived in Australia during 2009 and 12.3 million left, making the total number of arrivals and departures almost 25 million.
Original forecasts predicted international departures would fall by almost 3 per cent last year, however they rose by over 8 per cent as Australia's economy fared relatively well throughout the global economic downturn. A record 6.3 million Australian residents made short-term departures, up from 5.8 million in 2008, according to the ABS research. The top three destinations for Australian travellers were New Zealand, the USA and Indonesia were while tourists visiting Australia were most likely to come from New Zealand, the UK and the USA. Traditionally strong markets such as Japan and Korea posted significant declines in arrivals mainly due to their local economic conditions.

Tourism WA launches new positioning and Taxi Ride campaign

Tourism Western Australia has launched a new brand positioning and marketing campaign targeting 35 to 64 year olds from Australia and key international markets including the USA, UK and Japan.
The new Experience Extraordinary positioning, created by Host, will aim to educate consumers on what they can do in the state.
Stephanie Buckland, Tourism WA CEO, said: “We know from extensive research that many of our target consumers don’t know what there is to do and see in Western Australia and that this is a barrier to travel. They are not aware of the unique experiences on offer in Western Australia.”
The Extraordinary Taxi Ride was created to support the new brand positioning. It will see the launch of a nine-week taxi journey with 11 sets of passengers from Australia and around the world undertaking the 11 legs of the journey around the state.

Perth Skyshow set to go off

SEVEN barges and five buildings are being wired up to go off with a bang this Australia Day. Maria Noakes takes a look behind the scene.
Today Howards & Sons Pyrotechnics crews were busy setting up for the fireworks and laser spectacular that will light up the sky on Monday night.
The 30 minute extravaganza will be fired from 7 barges on the Swan River and 5 Perth City Buildings and will see over 20,000 pyrotechnic effects dancing in perfect synchronisation with a music soundtrack.
This pyrotechnic and laser show will require a team of eighteen experienced crew working for fourteen days to install, conduct and dismantle the display. Take a look at Australia Day 2009
A creative team of designers and programmers worked on the Skyworks display for 9 months.
Assisting the entire team to produce such as magnificent spectacle is state-of-the-art technology; seventeen computer controllers will be used to fire over 7,180 digitally synchronised cues to ensure every pyrotechnic effect bursts on the beats of the music.
