Perth International Puts Western Australia On The Map

With prize money of $2 million, the event will become Australia's richest and world number nine Jason Dufner is another who will appear at Lake Karrinyup.
With prize money of $2 million, the event will become Australia's richest and world number nine Jason Dufner is another who will appear at Lake Karrinyup.

"It's the biggest purse in Australia and we are pushing for more big names in the run-up to the event," spokesperson Janine Pittaway told Reuters on Friday.

"The event is supported by the tour of Western Australia and the plan is for it to become a long-term tournament for Western Australia, like the Heineken Classic and Johnnie Walker Classic."

South African Schwartzel has already won seven times on the European Tour, culminating in his stunning victory at the 2011 U.S. Masters, where he became the first player to birdie the final four holes to win at Augusta.

The 27-year-old will be bidding to emulate countrymen Gary Player, Ernie Els and Retief Goosen, who are all past champions at Lake Karrinyup.

"I have always enjoyed the people and the culture (in Australia) and the great sporting rivalry between our countries in cricket and rugby," Schwartzel said in a statement.

"I am looking forward to visiting Perth and hopefully I can continue the South African success at Lake Karrinyup."

Dufner has been a model of consistency this year, the 35-year-old runner-up at the 2011 U.S. PGA Championship and boasting seven top 10 finishes this season.

"I have a real affinity for Australia and have heard a lot of great things about Perth and Western Australia," said Dufner, set to make his Ryder Cup debut next month.

"Hopefully I can continue my good play Down Under," added the American. "I am excited to have the opportunity to play in Western Australia for the first time."

The event is co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour of Australasia and the European Tour and the winner of the event will receive an exemption to the World Golf Championships, the HSBC Champions.

Perth Airport Expansion In The Works

Perth Airport has announced it has secured Broad Construction Services (WA) Pty Ltd to undertake the first stage of it’s A$300 million expansion works of the international terminal.
The initial construction stage will begin in May 2012, and includes a major expansion of the incoming duty free retail shops, immigration area on the first level and the baggage reclaim hall.

The expansion which is scheduled to be completed in 2014 will help alleviate the congestion in queuing and waiting times for its customers.

Perth Airport chief executive officer, Brad Geatches said the expansion would ensure the airport was able to meet the rapid growth in international passenger numbers.

“We are very aware that, due to the growth in international passengers to over 3.3 million in 2011, more than 220,000 up on the prior year, the current international arrivals experience is not what it should be,” Mr Geatches said.

“We are committed to ensuring everyone who travels through Perth Airport has a high quality experience, so we are completely changing the arrivals journey and doubling the size of all processing areas.”

Mr Geatches said Broad Construction Services is also currently working on the construction of the new A$120 million Domestic Terminal, which will service regional WA and some interstate routes from early next year.

Additionally, in an effort to reduce congestion to the International Terminal, Perth Airport has just completed a new intersection between Tonkin Highway and Dunreath Drive.
The A$10 million intersection is located to the north of the current Tonkin Highway/Leach Highwayintersection.

The intersection allows passengers to travel between Tonkin Highway and the International Terminal, however, it does not allow access to the Domestic Terminals.

“We are investing more than A$750 million over three years to expand Perth Airport, and the transformation of the current International Terminal represents the first stage towards achieving our vision of having all commercial air services operating from one convenient location by 2020,” Mr Geatches added.

Ironmen and Ironwomen to Take on Perth’s Best Surf Beaches this Summer

Perth’s famous surf beaches will be home to a new surf life saving event launched today by Tourism Minister Kim Hames.

“The Indian Ocean Classic, a new public participation event, would see athletes compete in an ironman style-event against some of the sport’s legends,” Dr Hames said.

“The race, which involves surf ski, boards, swimming and running will take place at some of Western Australia’s most famous beaches including Trigg, Scarborough, City Beach, Swanbourne and Cottesloe.

“The Indian Ocean Classic will be open to the general public and people can race as individuals or enter in teams of four. Organisers say entries will include teams of past ironmen legends, celebrities and local sports stars.”

The Minister also announced that the Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Ironman Series and Ironwoman Series would return to WA for the first time in 15 years, thanks to State Government support, through Eventscorp.

“The Ironman and Ironwoman series is recognised as one of the world’s most gruelling ocean-based competitions and last year each race attracted an average television audience of more than one million,” he said.

“Hosting a round of the competition for the next four years gives us the opportunity to showcase Western Australia’s extraordinary coastline to a huge TV audience and help further promote the sport in the State.”

The elite race will follow a similar course to the Indian Ocean Classic. Dr Hames said the State Government, through Eventscorp, was proud to support both events for the next four years. He congratulated event director and Ironman legend Guy Leech for developing both the Ironman race and the Indian Ocean Classic in partnership with sports marketing and management company, SEL.

The Indian Ocean Classic will be staged on Saturday, January 28, 2012. The Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Ironman Series race will be held on Sunday, January 29, 2012.

2012 Perth Event Show Taking Shape

Organisers of the inaugural Perth Event Show say improving buyer attendance for the 2012 event will be a priority.

Acknowledging a shortfall in expected 2011 show numbers, managing director of CMS Events Richard Campbell said pre-show buyer registrations were strong at 1293 but almost 400 failed to turn out for either of the two show days.

Cambell told a meeting of exhibitors attending a debrief on the event that next year's show would be run mid-week. He also said several ideas for encouraging buyer attendance (some suggested during the debrief) would be incorporated into the marketing plan.

Of those buyers attending in 2011, the majority - 48 per cent - registered as event planners; with corporate planners 13 per cent; association planners three per cent; conference organisers 12 per cent and others 24 per cent.

He said the show’s target of 78 exhibitors fell short by 10, but this would not be a problem in 2012 as most of this year's exhibitors had already signed on for 2012 and several who missed out this year said they would definitely be participating next year.

"During the show I was told by some major companies including airlines, transport companies and five-star hotels that they had to miss this year because budgets had been locked in but they intend a strong showing in 2012," said Campbell.

Cambell said he was satisfied with the media mix used to promote the inaugural show but was disappointed the consumer media did not give more support. Next year CMS Events will use social and electronic media more for the 2012 event.

The dates for 2012 have been confirmed as 16 May with an official opening lunch and keynote address followed by an afternoon exhibition session and a 17 May exhibition day.

CMS Events is targeting 90 exhibitors in 2012 and 1500 visitors. Suggestions that came from the debrief and which have been adopted include: Marketing to the personal assistant and Association market; increased entertainment options; badges for better identification of buyers/sellers; more structured familiarisations in and around the show and greater collaboration between CMS Events, Perth Convention Bureau and Associations to focus events around the Perth Events Show.
