The annual Japan Festival of Perth returns this weekend!

The Japan Festival of Perth is a free event which celebrates the long history of friendship between Australian and Japanese people.

This year, the Festival will be held on Saturday 7 March from 12:30pm-8:00pm in Forest Place, Perth.

Click here to view the program!

There will also be heaps of Japanese food, craft and goods stalls for you to visit including Japanese souvenirs, anime and cosplay goods and a chance to try origami and even a shateki darts game!

Yummy Japanese food that will be available at the Festival include: udon, yaki-soba and ramen noodles, takoyaki (octopus balls), kaki-gori (shaved ice with sugar syrup), okonomi-yaki (Japanese pancake) and of course, sushi!

There are significant Japanese nationals working and studying in Western Australia and also some are living on a permanent basis raising their Australian families.

The numbers are growing, reflecting the long history of friendship between the two nations.

The Japan Festival Association in Perth Inc. (“JFAP”) was established in 2013 as a non-profit organisation with an aim to raise the overall Japanese profile in WA.

As part of its activities JFAP reached out to these communities to look for ways to become more closely involved with and to contribute to this beautiful multi-cultural society.

The idea of Japanese “MATSURI” (meaning “festival” in Japanese) was launched as an opportunity to realise this dream under the name of the Japan Festival Event.

Click here for more information on the Festival! View the video below from last year's Festival!

The matsuri is a free event with lots of fun for kids and families as well as adults, offering a great opportunity for the Perth community to experience one of the most important cultures of Japan.

Perth Airport Considers Reduction in Arrival Spacing

Reduced arrival spacing has been suggested as a means to minimise delays, enhance operations and increase capacity at Perth Airport.

Airservices Australia and the United Kingdom’s air navigation service provider, UK NATS, released findings from their July 2012 jointly-funded study, indicating measures necessary in maximising the airport’s efficiency.

Perth Airport has responded positively to the 45 recommended amendments.

“Perth Airport is well advanced in implementing the 13 recommendations relating to our operations”, Perth Airport chief executive Brad Geatches said.

“We are confident that if Airservices Australia implement the 25 recommendations relating to their procedures and airlines cooperate with the remaining seven recommendations, significant improvements can be made at Perth Airport.”

Perth Airport will employ a schedule coordination system by early 2013, allocating landing and take-off slots at the airport and aiding in airport management during peak operational periods.
“At the moment, we have a significant peak morning departures period, from 6am to 8am every Tuesday to Thursday... There is more than sufficient airfield capacity to meet demand, however, the practices of some airlines and Airservices Australia have not seen optimal usage of the infrastructure,” Mr Geatches said.

“The report highlights that mid-week morning congestion, driven by first-in first-out departures, can only be addressed by continuing to spread airline schedules, or by constructing a third runway.”

Perth Goes 'Into the Shimmer Heat' Theare-Dance Operatic Show

Into The Shimmer Heat promises to be the year's most adventurous operatic-theatre-dance outing, says ABC 720's cultural correspondent Victoria Laurie.

It's odd to think of an operatic work based around the story of a girl who is mute, but then Into the Shimmer Heat is no ordinary chamber opera.

And before anyone runs away fro the word 'opera', this is an anti-elitist show that defies categorisation. It invites audiences to go on an adventure with a team of highly experienced creative minds to experience "a hot air balloon disaster, a violent storm, vast emptiness, an oasis teaming with life, and a comical camel."

Into the Shimmer Heat has its world premiere in Perth on Saturday 8th October and runs until 15th October. It's been a long time in the making; it began life in 1995 as an experiment between the contemporary music group, Nova Ensemble, and Spare Parts Puppet Theatre to create an opera for young people about youth suicide.

But it soon evolved into a sophisticated work for adults and adolescents, says writer-director Phil Thomson. "The story is about grief and damage and the importance of living on," he says, explaining that the mute girl has survived a balloon accident in which her mother dies. "She meets all kinds of spirit world figures who convince her that it's time to return to the world and resume her life."

"We agonised for ages over whether we would even call the show an opera," says David Pye, Nova Ensemble's musical director, who composed the music with colleague Lee Buddle. "For a long time we were thinking of it as a piece of theatre, with dance and puppetry and sound design. But we came around to 'opera' because it's an all-encompassing word and traditionally opera was used for all the cutting edge art forms of the day."

At a time when pre-20th century operatic 'museum pieces' are still the main opera fare around Australia, Shimmer Heat was clearly too cutting edge. The WA Opera declared no interest in staging it, so it st on the shelf for years. But with a supernova of WA talent involved - among them opera singers Sara Macliver, Fiona Campbell and Robert Hofmann, and internationally renowned puppeteers Joanne Foley and Ian Tregonning - the Department of Culture and the Arts and UWA willingly came on board with nearly $400,000 in funding.

Says Pye, "traditional opera goers will love the gorgeous singing of Sara and Fiona on stage, while others will like the contemporary dance aspect, or the puppetry because that plays a big part in the opera."

The musical score stretches from 21st century music through to Goth Metal but, he adds, it generally aims to be melodic and accessible. "We were very much of the view that we weren't writing for an ivory tower audience but for the general public to come along and enjoy. And the story is interesting but not overly complex."

WAAPA dance graduate Sofie Burgoyne plays the role of a lonely teenage girl who is in a balloon accident that her mother doesn't survive. "She is mute and can only express herself through her movements and the music she listens to," says Pye. "The opera is about the hallucinations of the girl as she listens to one song in particular."

That particular song was composed by a new WA musical talent, Anthony Cormican; according to Pye, "he happens to be a fantastic solo guitar artist and recording engineer whose band has just signed to Atlantic Records in the States." He wrote a song called 'Feel', "and we've been able to extract threads of it that permeate the whole opera."

"It was always Lee's and my intention that we should incorporate the music of today, just as traditional operas did. So we wanted a kind of 'Vampire teen soft porn rock heavy metal genre'," Pye says teasingly. "But we basically don't move in those circles, so Anthony - who then asked to perform in the show - became our own personal Rock God!"

"Our puppeteers are doing some wonderful stuff too, creating the illusion of objects floating towards you. Much of the opera is set in the spirit world, so we have free rein to play with elements of magic."

Pye says Nova Ensemble has long been wanting to create larger scale events with bigger impact, "so that our work is taken notice of more widely. We're working on the idea of streaming the last performance of Into the Shimmer Heat on the internet, it's just a matter of working out how people might pay for it! Any time Nova plays, usually in small concerts, the public says 'wow, you're great, so why haven't we heard of you?"

100 DAYS UNTIL PERTH 2011- Sailing Championships

Perth 2011 is celebrating a significant milestone with just 100 days to go until the biggest international sailing event of the year.

The World Championships will take place from 3-18 December, with 1200 athletes from 80 nations competing for 10 World Titles in the fresh breezes off Fremantle in Western Australia. The World Championships are also the key qualifier for the sailing competition at the London 2012 Olympic Games, with 75 per cent of places in London being decided in Perth in December.

Perth 2011 Chairman Ian Campbell said that a significant buzz is starting to build around the World Championships.

“Perth and Fremantle provide some of the best conditions for sailing in the world,” Campbell said.

“Combine these naturally favourable conditions for the sport with the hospitality and warmth of Fremantle and Western Australia and the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships are poised to be memorable.

“The Worlds Festival programme is shaping up very nicely and North Street Productions are committed to ensuring that there is something for everyone attending the World Championships away from the water as well as on it.

“Perth is set for “grandstand sailing” as the Medal Races for each class will be sailed just metres from the shore on Centre Course, allowing spectators to witness the excitement of the World Championships first hand.

“There’s a great team working very hard at Perth 2011 to ensure that when the world turns to Perth in December, we’ll be ready to provide a wonderful platform for the best young sailors on the planet to realise their World Championships and Olympic Games dreams,” Campbell said.

Running parallel to the sailing competition will be the Worlds Festival, a 16 day cultural programme that will include more than 200 free events. The Worlds Festival will be centred on, but not limited to, the Worlds Village on Esplanade Park in Fremantle, with venues around Perth’s port city hosting theatre, art exhibitions and music performances through the 16 days of the Worlds Festival.

Further details of the Worlds Festival will be released in due course.
The dream begins in Perth!

More than 70,000 Expected at V8 Supercars

BARBAGALLO Raceway takes pole position in Australian motorsport this weekend as the V8 Supercar Australia Championship makes a roaring return to WA.

Organisers say more than 70,000 people are expected to descend on Wanneroo from Friday to Sunday to catch the V8 talents of stars like Craig Lowndes, Mark Winterbottom and WA’s Garth Tander.

V8 Supercar Australia chief executive Martin Whitaker said there was an “awful lot of people” looking forward to the event being back in Perth after a one-year hiatus.

“Many people love being in Western Australia and it’s a race that everyone looks forward to; it’s great to be back on the card,” he said. “One of the criteria we’ve been working to over the last 12 months is to make sure we are back in every state and territory in Australia.

“By being back in Perth we have achieved that objective and that is fundamental to the whole championship.”

This year’s event features one of the strongest support line-ups of the national season with five racing categories complementing the main showdown in a hotted-up Perth schedule.

“It’s the biggest on-track spectacle we have ever seen in Perth,” WA Sporting Car Club event co-ordinator Jennifer Harrison said.

Spectators will be treated to a variety of racing, including the Porsche Carrera Cup after a two-year absence, the Australian Superbike Championship and for the first time in Perth, the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series.

Mr Whitaker said the Fujitsu series featured Australia’s future V8 champions.

“Normally it’s a bit of a long trip for them (the Fujitsu drivers) but I think they recognise the importance of the event so they will be with us,” Mr Whitaker said.

WA Tourism Minister Kim Hames said the event had been heavily promoted locally, nationally and internationally.

“The increased event marketing and the unprecedented number of support categories will ensure the event will be bigger and better than ever before,” he said.

Ford’s Dean Fiore will be one of three WA drivers competing in the main race along with Holden’s Garth Tander and Karl Reindler and said he was hoping for a hometown advantage.

“It’s much trickier than it looks because it has small tight areas, undulations on the hills, and then it opens out across the back so you can get high speeds on a small length circuit,” he said.

“To cap it off, the surface doesn’t offer much grip.”

Fiore said he was looking forward to driving in front of his family.

“I’m looking forward to proving to Mum that professional driving is a proper career – I don’t think she’s convinced,” he said.

Off the track, Mr Whitaker said the WA drivers would keep the interstate competitors entertained.

“We’re all going to go around to Dean Fiore’s house where his Mum can do some traditional Italian cooking,” he said.

Spectators can get their first glimpse of Australia’s best supercar drivers in practice session one on Friday at 9.15am before the main 50-lap races ignite at 2.05pm on Saturday and Sunday.

- Drivers will be available to meet fans from 11.30am to 1.30pm on Thursday, April 28, in Forrest Place.
