Perth Festival Opens at Cottesloe Beach

The 2012 Perth International Arts Festival had a perfect start to their tenth festival with a big turnout and stunning weather at Cottesloe Beach this morning.

Perth Festival organisers were uncertain how many people would attend with the early start time of 7am but over 2500 people made their way to the beach for the free event.

Just after sunrise Indigenous Noongar elders and performers opened the Festival with Gina Williams performing a Welcome to Country that included traditional dance and storytelling.

Hundreds of local vocalists and musicians had sand between their toes as they performed on the beach with the Indian Ocean as their backdrop.

It's Artistic Director Jonathan Holloway's first Perth Festival this year after working on the Norfolk and Norwich Festival in the United Kingdom.

"There were very beautiful beaches in North Norfolk but not quite this close and not quite this beautiful and not with this weather," Mr Holloway said.

"You wouldn't find many hundreds of people just randomly wandering along a beach at 6am in Norfolk."

Mr Holloway says he wanted to utilise the natural amphitheatre of Cottesloe Beach for the opening of the 2012 Perth Festival.

"We're cheating really, let's be honest, we've come to the view and the space - then we're filling it rather than creating something."

The Cottesloe dawn event is part of the official opening called 'Dusk: Dawn' and will culminate in the Great Southern with a sunset event on the Albany foreshore for the launch of the tenth year of the Great Southern Festival.

Tonight sees the opening of Beautiful Burnout, an exhilarating piece of physical theatre exploring the thrill and beauty of boxing, being hosted here at the ABC in East Perth. Studio 61 has been transformed with a real boxing ring taking centre stage.

Perth Festival organisers estimate that the festival attracts about half a million people to free and paid events each year and are expecting to sell 220,000 tickets to performances this year.

Perth Cricket Fans Urged to Dress Up for Chance to Win Carribean Trip

IT'S the only statistic missing from Mike Hussey's impressive cricket resume – and it doesn't bother him one bit.

The veteran Australian batsman is yet to post a one-day century at his beloved WACA Ground and Friday’s match against Sri Lanka could be his last chance to reach triple figures in front of his hometown fans.

Hussey, 36, is no certainty to play on next summer and will be keen to leave a lasting impression on the ground where he made his international debut in 2004 should it be his last major match in Perth.

A century similar to the one former WA teammate Adam Gilchrist scored in his final international appearance at the venue would be a dream come true for Hussey, but the crowd favourite won’t be losing any sleep if he doesn’t.

“Generally the position and time I come into bat makes it difficult to score a hundred, so for me to have to get a hundred generally means we’re in a bit of trouble and that’s not something I want,” said Hussey, who averages an impressive 76.25 from eight ODIs in Perth, including a highest score of 78.

“To come in with four of five overs to go and try and hit every ball for six would be definitely more the recipe for me.”

Hussey encouraged Perth fans to dress up during for the Friday’s game for a chance to win a trip to the Caribbean next month when Australia tours the West Indies.

“Hopefully the entertainment on the field is going to be very good, but you also get a bit of entertainment off the field as well,” he said.

“Seeing some of the different costumes and get-ups that people get into can make for a pretty humorous afternoon at the cricket.”

Cricket Australia is also offering a number of prizes on the day for the best-dressed fans.

Lady Gaga to Tour Australia this June-July

Lady Gaga is promising Australian fans fireworks when she returns for six shows as part of her Born This Way world tour.

The pop megastar will play arena dates in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth in June and July with the singer hinting at adding dates.

'The Haus of Gaga and I have worked for months conceiving a spectacular stage,' Gaga said in a statement.

'The Born This Way Ball is an electro-metal pop-opera; the tale of the beginning, the genesis of the kingdom of Fame.

'How we were birthed and how we will die celebrating.'

The eccentric singer has been teasing fans on Twitter and Facebook with sketches of her stage design and posted a picture of the first official tour poster.

Coloured in a black and white palette with purple and green highlights, it shows the star's alien alter ego appearing in the cloudy night sky over a castle.

Renowned for her quirky art, Gaga brought her lavish stage show to Sydney last July for her one-off Monster Hall performance.

Promising fans she would be back, Australians will be among the first to see the world tour after dates in Asia and New Zealand.

Cirque du Soleil - 2012 Shows Australia

Cirque du Soleil returns to Australia with a spectacular new production for the whole family, presented under the blue-and-yellow Grand Chapiteau (Big Top).

OVO is a headlong rush into a colourful eco-system teeming with life, where insects work, eat, crawl, flutter, play, fight and look for love in a non-stop riot of energy and movement. The insects' home is a world of biodiversity and beauty filled with noisy action and moments of quiet emotion.

When a mysterious egg appears in their midst, the insects are awestruck and intensely curious about this iconic object that represents the enigma and cycles of their lives.

It's love at first sight when a gawky, quirky insect arrives in this bustling community and a fabulous ladybug catches his eye - and the feeling is mutual.

The cast of OVO is comprised of 54 performing artists from 16 countries specializing in many acrobatic acts. One highlight of OVO is the stunning flying trapeze act, in which six flyers soar 40 feet in the air, making this the biggest act of its kind to ever be presented under a big top by Cirque du Soleil. It combines many circus disciplines, including banquine, Russian swing and swinging chair. The finale features 20 artists running, jumping and leaping up a 24-foot vertical wall.

OVO is overflowing with contrasts. The hidden, secret world at our feet is revealed as tender and torrid, noisy and quiet, peaceful and chaotic. And as the sun rises on a bright new day, the vibrant cycle of insect life begins anew.
